Every computer owner - whether an IT enthusiast or a so-called “Sunday” user who uses the device to browse news online and play solitaire - encounters various errors displayed on the monitor screen. These can be caused by many different reasons - from hardware failures, through software incompatibility, to errors resulting from improper user actions. Some indicate serious malfunctions and even prevent the use of the computer. Others do not directly affect work comfort, so theoretically, they can be ignored - at least for some time, hoping the problem will not recur in the future.
One of the most common errors is the so-called error 43. This error does not discriminate - it can appear on any version of Windows - both in the latest edition numbered 11, and earlier ones: 10, 8, 7, and even in Windows Vista or XP.
The full message usually looks like this:
- If the system is set to the Polish language version: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
- If the system is set to the English language version: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
Code 43 - Windows - causes of the error message
Error code 43 means that the system is signaling communication complications with one of the devices. In the vast majority of cases, it indicates problems with the graphics card, but the message can also be caused by a malfunctioning printer, webcam, USB network card, or any other peripheral device.
The appearance of error code 43 can indeed indicate physical damage to one of the devices - in such a case, the only solution might be repairing the damaged hardware or purchasing a new unit. Most often, however, the message is displayed due to software failure, more precisely - the driver responsible for communication between the system and the device. So if it is a graphics card problem, the error can probably be blamed on the graphics processor drivers. This means that fixing error 43 can take just a few minutes and will not require specialist intervention.
Why does this happen? The answer lies in the industry itself, which never stands still. Device drivers are usually updated regularly by the manufacturer to meet the dynamic development of operating systems, new technologies, and user requirements. Due to the complexity and multitude of standards, driver updates can cause a temporary “dispute” between the system and the device. Conversely, updating the operating system (for example, upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11) can also cause error 43 to occur.
Code 43 - graphics card - sometimes simple solutions work
In most cases, error 43 is the system’s way of notifying the user that the computer cannot detect the graphics card. Before proceeding to more advanced problem-solving methods, a good idea might be a simple computer restart - the method “have you tried turning it off and on again,” famous from countless memes, is not elaborate but can be effective.
What to do if the problem is not resolved?
Graphics card - code 43 - driver management
In such a case, it is best to start by updating the drivers - perhaps the manufacturer has already published an update eliminating this problem. You can download the latest graphics card drivers from the manufacturer’s website - nVidia (if the issue concerns GeForce cards) or AMD (if the system does not detect a Radeon family card). If the computer has an integrated graphics card (a solution often used, for example, in laptops), you can download the drivers from the computer manufacturer’s page or find them on the CD included in the set.
If error 43 appeared directly after driver updates, the solution may be to roll back to the previous driver version. To do this, just open Windows Device Manager (you can access it by typing its name in the Start menu or through Control Panel → Hardware and Sound → Devices and Printers → Device Manager). Then select the device from the list (it will usually be highlighted to help the user identify it - if not, just expand the Graphics Cards menu), right-click the card name and enter Properties. There is a special Driver tab that allows managing the device drivers.
The last thing you need to do is click the “Roll Back Driver” button.
The methods presented above are the most likely solutions to fix error 43 in Windows. If the problem still occurs despite applying the advice, the cause may lie not in the software but in the device’s condition - for example, the graphics card may lose functionality due to age, previous overheating, or faulty connection to the computer’s motherboard. In such a case, assistance from a service technician or purchasing new equipment may be necessary.
