Error message: Code 43 – what does it mean?

Every computer owner—whether an IT enthusiast or a so-called “casual” user who uses their device to browse the web and play solitaire—encounters various types of errors displayed on the screen. These can be caused by a wide variety of factors—from hardware failures and software incompatibilities to errors resulting from user mistakes. Some signal serious malfunctions and even prevent the computer from being used. Others do not directly affect the user experience, so in theory they can be ignored—at least for a while, hoping the problem won’t resurface in the future.

One of the most common errors is the so-called Error 43. This error isn’t picky—it can occur on any version of Windows, including the latest version (Windows 11) as well as earlier versions such as Windows 10, 8, 7, and even Windows Vista or XP.

The full message usually looks like this:

  • If the system is set to the Polish language: Windows has stopped this device because it reported problems. (Code 43)
  • If the system is set to English: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

Code 43 - Windows - causes of the error message

Error code 43 indicates that the system is reporting communication issues with one of the devices. In the vast majority of cases, it points to problems with the graphics card; however, the message could just as easily be caused by a malfunction in the printer, webcam, USB network adapter, or any other peripheral device.

The appearance of error code 43 may indeed indicate physical damage to one of the devices—in which case, the only solution may be to repair the damaged hardware or purchase a new unit. Most often, however, the message appears due to a software failure, specifically a driver responsible for communication between the system and the device in question. So if the problem is with the graphics card, the error is likely caused by the graphics processor drivers. This means that fixing error 43 may take only a few minutes and will not require the intervention of a specialist.

Why does this happen? The answer lies in the industry itself, which is constantly evolving. Device drivers are typically updated on an ongoing basis by the manufacturer to keep pace with the rapid development of operating systems, new technologies, and user requirements. Due to the high complexity and multitude of standards, updating drivers can cause a temporary “conflict” between the system and the device. Conversely, updating the operating system (for example, switching from Windows 10 to Windows 11) can also cause error 43.

Code 43 - graphics card - sometimes simple solutions work

In most cases, error 43 indicates that the system is unable to detect the graphics card. Before we move on to more advanced troubleshooting methods, it might be a good idea to simply restart the computer—the well-known “have you tried turning the device on and off” method, familiar from countless memes, isn’t particularly sophisticated, but it can be effective.

What should you do if the problem hasn't been resolved?

Graphics card - code 43 - driver management

In this case, it’s best to start by updating your drivers—the manufacturer may have released an update in the meantime that resolves this issue. You can download the latest graphics card drivers from the manufacturer’s website—NVIDIA (if the issue involves GeForce cards) or AMD (if the system doesn’t detect a Radeon card). If your computer is equipped with an integrated graphics card (a solution often used in laptops, for example), you can download the drivers from the computer manufacturer’s website or find them on the disc included with the computer.

If error 43 appeared immediately after updating the drivers, the solution may be to revert to the previous driver version. Simply open the Windows Device Manager (you can access it by typing its name in the Start menu or via Control Panel → Hardware and Sound → Devices and Printers → Device Manager). Next, select the device from the list (it will usually be highlighted to make it easier to identify—if not, simply expand the Display Adapters menu), right-click on the adapter’s name, and open the Properties menu. There you’ll find a special Driver tab that allows you to manage the device’s drivers.

The last thing you need to do is click the "Restore Driver" button.

The methods described above are the most likely solutions for fixing Error 43 in Windows. If the problem persists despite following these tips, the cause may not be the software but the condition of the device—for example, the graphics card may be losing its performance due to age, previous overheating, or a faulty connection to the computer’s motherboard. In such a case, you may need to seek assistance from a technician or purchase new hardware.
