Which computers can we install Windows 11 on? Hardware requirements

Planning to switch to the latest Microsoft operating system but unsure if your hardware can handle it? Learn the minimum hardware requirements for Windows 11 and find out how to check if your computer meets them. Get ready for the update now!

Windows 11 – requirements. The processor is key

The heart of every computer is the processor, and Microsoft’s newest system requires a really powerful heart. What does Windows 11 need? The minimum requirements are:

  • a processor with a clock speed of at least 1 GHz with 2 or more cores;
  • support for 64-bit architecture
  • compatibility with the x86 or ARM64 instruction set.

If your processor is older than the Intel Core 8th generation or AMD Ryzen 2000, unfortunately, Windows 11 will not work with it. However, there are exceptions – Microsoft has published a list of older processors that are also supported.

Minimum Windows 11 RAM requirements

Windows 11 is a modern system that requires at least 4 GB of RAM for smooth operation. Of course, the more the better – with 8 GB or 16 GB you can expect much smoother performance, especially if you use many applications simultaneously.

It’s also a good idea to invest in fast RAM modules, such as DDR4. They will speed up the system operation and reduce program load times.

Hard drive – capacity matters

Windows 11 takes up a lot of disk space – the minimum requirement is as much as 64 GB of free space. If you plan to install many programs or games, it’s worth considering an even larger drive, such as 256 GB or 512 GB.

The best choice will be an SSD. Compared to traditional HDDs, solid-state drives are much faster and more responsive. If you have an older computer with an HDD, it might be time for an upgrade.

Graphics card – system requirements

Although Windows 11 isn’t very demanding regarding the graphics card, it requires a GPU that is:

  • compatible with DirectX 12 (including DirectX 12 Ultimate);
  • supports WDDM 2.0 driver.

Most modern graphics cards meet these requirements. If your computer has integrated Intel HD Graphics 600 or newer, that is sufficient for smooth operation of Windows 11. In the case of dedicated graphics cards, models from recent years by NVIDIA or AMD should also have no problems handling the new operating system.

Display – quality matters

For comfortable work with Windows 11, a screen resolution of at least 720p (1280x720) and a diagonal larger than 9 inches. Of course, the higher the resolution and the larger the screen, the better – With Full HD (1920x1080) or 4K (3840x2160), you’ll enjoy crisp images and plenty of workspace.

It is also worth paying attention to the panel type – the best choice is an IPS panel, which provides vivid colors and wide viewing angles.

Other requirements – TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot

Besides standard components, Windows 11 also requires the presence of a TPM (Trusted Platform Module) version 2.0 module. This is a special chip responsible for system security and protecting sensitive data.

Secure Boot is also necessary, which protects your computer from malware during the system startup phase. To use it, you must enable the “UEFI Firmware” option in your computer’s BIOS.which protects your computer from malware at the system startup stage. To use it, you need to turn on the “UEFI Firmware” option in your computer’s BIOS.

How to check if your computer meets the requirements?

Not sure if your computer meets the Windows 11 requirements? It’s simple – just use Microsoft’s free “PC Health Check” tool. After downloading and installing the program, click the “Check now” button – shortly after you’ll find out if your hardware is ready for Windows 11.

You can also manually check your computer’s specifications:

  • Processor – right-click on “This PC” and select “Properties.” You will find processor information in the “System” section. “This PC” and select “Properties.” You will find processor information in the “System”
  • RAM – in Task Manager, go to the “Performance” tab and select “Memory.” Task Manager go to the tab “Performance” and select “Memory.”
  • Hard drive – in File Explorer, right-click on the system drive (usually C:) and select “Properties.”
  • Graphics card – open Device Manager and expand the “Display adapters” section. Device Manager expand the section “Display adapters.”

Windows 11 has specific hardware requirements. If your computer does not meet any of them, it’s better to stay with the older Windows 10, which will be supported until 2025.

FAQ – frequently asked questions

  •  Can I install Windows 11 on an older computer?

If your computer does not meet the minimum requirements, it is officially not supported by Windows 11. You can try installing the system at your own risk, but Microsoft does not guarantee it will run stably or receive updates.

  • Do I need a TPM 2.0 module to install Windows 11?

Yes, this is one of the requirements. Without TPM 2.0, installation is not possible. Some older computers may have TPM 1.2 – unfortunately, this is insufficient.

  • How to check if my computer has Secure Boot enabled?

Enter your computer’s BIOS – usually by pressing F2, F10, or Del during startup. Then find the “Secure Boot” option and make sure it is set to “Enabled.”
