Windows Defender is an application or rather a suite of services that provides security for the Windows system. The program protects against viruses as well as other types of malicious software - spyware, trojans, and others. Windows Defender is the default application that is provided free of charge with Windows systems.
The antivirus provided by Microsoft consists of many different services that can be divided into two main categories - the antivirus application and the firewall (so-called firewall). The latter is responsible for protecting the computer from malicious software by constantly “patrolling” the internet connection.
Windows Defender - history
Interestingly, although the name Windows Defender is still commonly used and almost everyone refers to the application by this name, the original name has been changed several times - the current brand is Microsoft Defender Antivirus. In one of the Windows 10 updates (specifically in the update released nearly 2 years after the original system release, numbered 1703 or codenamed “Redstone 2”), Windows Defender officially changed its name to Windows Defender Antivirus. Nearly 3 years later, in 2020, the application’s name changed again - this time to Microsoft Defender Antivirus, which remains today.
The history of Windows Defender dates back to the early 21st century and the dominance of Windows XP in the operating system market. Initially, it could be downloaded for free as an anti-spyware program for Windows XP with Service Pack 2. In later editions of Windows, the application was already supplied together with the system as an integral element. It is undeniable that this program has come a long way and in its early market existence it was significantly less effective compared to competing programs.
Today Microsoft Defender Antivirus is still considered basic software but for a large part of home users it is completely sufficient to secure their operating system and the files on their computer. However, it is sometimes criticized for relatively slow updates compared to the best commercially available programs with similar functionalities.
How to disable Windows Defender. Windows 7, Windows 10, Windows 11
In Windows, Microsoft’s antivirus does not require manual activation every time - it activates with system startup and is designed to run in the background without involving the user. However, sometimes we want to turn it off - sometimes its “suspiciousness” towards certain programs is annoying, and sometimes the computer is simply protected by another antivirus program. Disabling Windows Defender is not difficult - it only requires visiting two system settings sections.
Windows Defender - how to disable the program and firewall in Windows 10 and 11?
In Windows 10, Defender is disabled exactly the same way as in Windows 11. The path is below:
Start → Settings → expand the menu by clicking on the 3 lines in the upper left corner → go to Privacy & Security → Windows Security → Virus & Threat Protection
Then uncheck the two features: Real-time protection and Cloud-delivered protection.
In the Virus & Threat Protection menu you will also find another tab - Firewall & Network Protection. Enter it, and you will see three options: Domain network, Private network, and Public network. Uncheck them all.
After each change, the system will ask to confirm the changes made.

Windows Defender - how to disable the program and firewall in Windows 7?
Control Panel → Windows Defender → tools → options → Administrator → uncheck “use this program”.
How to uninstall Windows Defender in Windows 7?
Note: uninstalling the program is a much bigger intervention in the operating system than simply temporarily disabling Windows Defender.
In the Start menu type services.msc and click the icon in the list. In the window, find Windows Defender and click on the name. Select “disable” in the startup options.
Does Windows Defender provide sufficient protection?
The question of whether we need additional protection beyond Windows Defender cannot be answered otherwise than “it depends.” Every user has their digital habits, uses specific programs, visits selected websites, and has different approaches to system security. Some users do not pay attention to protection against malicious software, others are very strict or even overzealous in this regard. It can be assumed that if the user uses the computer at a basic level and uses only original, trusted programs, Windows Defender will likely be sufficient protection.
It should be remembered that Windows Defender can coexist relatively conflict-free with other antivirus programs, but “conflicts” may occur between them - usually temporarily disabling one of them helps.
Besides Windows Defender (in fact Microsoft Defender Antivirus), the most commonly encountered antivirus programs include COMODO Antivirus, Avast, AVG, Bitdefender, G-Data, and many others.
