Practical ways to speed up Windows 10

translated text:"Successive editions of the Windows system handle maintaining their speed over months and even years better and better. This, of course, refers to the common saying from some time ago that a computer or laptop "slows down." Fortunately, Windows 10 or Windows 11 do not exhibit problems like Windows XP did, but it is still necessary to maintain proper system care and good usage practices. How to speed up a Windows 10/11 computer? Read our guide!"

Speeding up Windows 10 computer – remove unnecessary folders and programs

This advice may seem obvious, but a full disk is one of the most common causes of a slow computer. This is largely due to the design of SSD drives, which after exceeding roughly half their capacity (meaning 50% of the disk space filled with data) begin to slow down. This process becomes much more noticeable with even greater filling… and it cannot be prevented – except by regularly cleaning unused files and other digital “waste” from the memory. Nowadays, it is rare to find any other type of drive where the operating system is installed other than an SSD.

Another “typical” symptom of noticeable computer slowdown is various installed programs running in the background. Many applications during installation try to “sneak in” other related programs – for example, browser add-ons, antivirus software, or download managers. A less experienced user sometimes accepts installer proposals, resulting in unused programs that launch at system startup but consume computer resources.

Speeding up Windows startup – autostart

A big impact on the system startup speed is made by programs that load together with Windows. One way to speed up Windows 10 startup is therefore to limit this list to a minimum. You can find the list of programs by typing "Autostart" in the Start menu.

The list contains many system tools that you should not disable, so be careful in your selection. Many programs start in the background – including those you don't use daily (or at all), which can make their presence in the Autostart surprising. Programs will stop starting automatically if you click the toggle next to the application name and change the value to "off."

Speeding up Windows 10 computer – disk defragmentation

Fragmentation is a phenomenon where, over time and with successive operations performed on data stored on an HDD, file fragments "travel" to locations far apart on the disk. This causes a gradual slowdown in data reading.

Data fragmentation in newer editions of Windows is not as big a problem as it used to be, meaning the OS is able to control it to a certain extent. Nonetheless, regular defragmentation is a good way to maintain software "digital hygiene" and speed up Windows 10/11.

To run the built-in tool, type "defragment and optimize drives" in the search bar on the Start menu. Then select the appropriate drive and click "Optimize." The whole process should take no more than a few dozen seconds or a few minutes.

Among other ways to defragment a drive, the use of external programs (for example Defraggler) is also mentioned, but in the vast majority of cases the system tool will be entirely sufficient.
