Windows cannot be activated — Error 0xC004C003: What it means and how to fix it (Windows 7, 8.1, 10, 11)

When attempting to activate Windows, you may encounter error 0xC004C003. This error code appears when the product key has been rejected by the Microsoft activation server as invalid, blocked, or unauthorized.

Unlike many other activation errors, error 0xC004C003 cannot be fixed using CMD commands, SFC scans, or system updates. In this case, the only effective solution is to replace the key with a new, legitimate, and authorized one.

What does error 0xC004C003 mean?

This error occurs when:

• The product key has been blocked by Microsoft (often due to abuse, such as frequent reactivation),

• The key was previously used on another computer and cannot be reactivated (e.g., after replacing the motherboard),

• The activation attempt is for the wrong version of the operating system (e.g., a Windows 10 Home product key for Windows 10 Pro),

If you encounter error 0xC004C003, none of these steps will help. Microsoft’s servers reject the key at the licensing level —it has simply been revoked. It’s like trying to pay at a store with a card that your bank has blocked: the system won’t accept it.
