While there are many third-party programs available for this purpose, the built-in Windows tools usually handle the task just fine. How do you shut down your computer at a specific time? Why shut down your computer temporarily?
Automatically shutting down the computer can be useful when the computer is performing a time-consuming, long-running task that requires little or no user supervision. This way, once the task is complete, the system can shut itself down, even if the user has long since gone to sleep or left the house. Scheduling the computer to shut down after a certain period of time is useful, for example, in the following cases:
- Downloading and uploading large files
- video rendering
- updating programs on the hard drive
There’s no point in leaving an unused computer running—not only does the hardware “wear out” for no reason, but it also draws power constantly, generating costs that are microscopic but become noticeable over months or years.
How to set up automatic shutdown for your computer? Instructions
The simplest method is to use the command line. The command you’ll need is “shutdown -s -t value”. Let’s walk through the entire procedure step by step.
Open the Command Prompt by typing "Command Prompt" or "cmd" in the search box on the Start menu. It's best to right-click and select "Run as administrator."
The command prompt will appear. Type “shutdown -s -t”, where after the space you should enter the number of seconds from that moment, after which the computer will shut down. If you want the system to shut down in an hour, the shutdown command in Windows 10 must be supplemented with the value 3600—after all, 1 hour is 3600 seconds.
Once you've typed the command to shut down the PC and confirmed it by pressing Enter, the system will display a confirmation message—a window with the relevant information will appear in the lower-right corner.

The command line also allows you to cancel a previous command. So if you decide to cancel the automatic shutdown, open the Windows Command Prompt again and type “shutdown -a”. After pressing Enter, the updated command status will reappear in the lower-right corner of the desktop.
A shortcut to shut down the computer on the desktop
If you plan to shut down your computer automatically on a regular basis, it’s a good idea to streamline the process. This involves setting up a shortcut on your desktop, which will eliminate the need to use the command line every time—you only need to configure it once, and then all you have to do is double-click it with the left mouse button.
- Right-click on an empty area of the desktop. Then select New → Shortcut. The following window will appear.

- The next step is to enter the command we just discussed: "shutdown -s -t value".

- In the next field, enter a name that describes the abbreviation.

- After clicking "Shut Down," a shortcut will appear on your desktop. Simply click it, and the system will automatically shut down at the specified time—in this case, in two hours.

How do I set my computer to shut down automatically (Windows 10)? Shutting down at a specific time
The instructions above for using the shutdown command and setting up a desktop shortcut are widely used and useful, but they are heavily dependent on the specific context in which they are executed. Clicking the shortcut will shut down the computer in a few minutes or hours from that moment. However, if a user performs repetitive, regular tasks on the computer, it’s worth considering setting the computer to shut down at a specific time. For this purpose, the Task Scheduler built into Windows works best.
Open Task Scheduler from the Start menu. On the right side, you’ll see a panel—click “Create a basic task.” The following wizard will appear.
- Enter a name and, if you like, a description for your task—this will make it easier to find later in the list.

- After clicking "Next," the wizard will ask you to specify a trigger—that is, when the task should run. In this case, we want the computer to shut down at a specific time every day, so we select the "Daily" option.

- The next step is to select a specific time.

- The next step is the "Action" tab. Select "Run program."

- Then type shutdown.exe—this is a built-in command that shuts down the computer.

- That's it—now the operating system will automatically shut down every day at the time you've chosen.
To disable the scheduled shutdown you’ve set up, right-click the task in the list (you’ll find it in the “Task Scheduler Library” menu) and click “Delete.” This will cancel the task.
