Windows Update isn't working

If you're having trouble with Windows Update and updates aren't downloading, you can download them manually from the official Microsoft website. All the update files are available there. However, there's no doubt that manually downloading update files every time can be a hassle. So it’s worth finding out what to do if the update service isn’t working properly and how to fix it.

Windows Update bypass

One of the basic ways to fix the service is to reset Windows Update. What does this involve? To reset Windows Update, you need to download a tool provided by Microsoft called the Reset Windows Update Tool. This is a file named "wureset," which is a .zip archive.

After downloading the archive, unzip it, and then run the `wureset_x64` file inside it. If you are using the 32-bit version of Windows, run the file with the `x86` extension. Importantly, you must run the program with administrator privileges.

After launching the program, a window will appear displaying information about the method currently being used to repair automatic system updates. Press Y to agree to the software’s operation. In the next step, select option 2 from the list that appears, which is "Reset the Windows Update Components." The process will begin, which may take a few minutes. During this time, the update service will be turned off and then turned back on. You do not need to restart your computer; Windows does not require it.

Another troubleshooting method provided by Microsoft, in addition to the "Reset Windows Update Components" tool, is the wu10.diagcab file. After downloading the program, simply run it and follow the on-screen instructions. If a problem is found, the troubleshooting tool will attempt to fix it.

Windows Update Agent

Fix Windows Update is another way to troubleshoot update issues in Windows. This tool comes in handy when the previous method doesn’t work. To get started, download the Fix Windows Update tool from the website, then run the .exe file. Next, follow the on-screen instructions.

Once the tool is installed and launched, it will run automatically. When it finishes, you can click any button to close the application and shut it down.

Offline Windows Update

If the update doesn't download automatically, the easiest way is to download it manually and install it. You can choose from a selection of update files on the Microsoft website. All files are available in the Microsoft Download Center.

First, before downloading a specific update, it’s a good idea to check which updates are available for installation. Computer users can do this using the Windows Update tool by searching for important or optional updates. This will provide you with the update number, which you should then enter into the search bar in the Download Center. Next, click "Download" next to the update to download all its components. Now, all you need to do is left-click or right-click to start the update process.

Another way is to simply search for the appropriate update online using a web browser.   You will still need the patch number. After entering the number in the address bar, a link will appear—click View and request the update. Then enter your email address and other verification details. Finally, click Request Patch.

You will receive the selected update at the email address you provided—specifically, a link to download it. This is also a way to install the update manually if Windows Update does not download and install updates automatically. However, this is only a temporary solution. It’s always worth keeping this in mind, especially since updates enhance the system not only with new features and various advanced options, but above all with security patches. This makes the system less vulnerable to hacker attacks and viruses.

Windows Update encountered an error. Please try again later – what does this message mean?

There are many issues that can arise during an update, some of which can even prevent it from completing. Among these issues, there are a few that occur most frequently. Typically, the message “Windows Update – An error occurred. Please try again later” appears. This message is accompanied by an error code. This code is crucial for quickly resolving the issues and, above all, for determining what specific update problem has occurred in this case.

Error code 0x800F081F

One of the most common issues is error code 0x800F081F. To fix this problem, you'll need to use the Command Prompt. Open the Start menu, type "cmd" into the search bar, and open the tool. Enter the following commands into the Command Prompt:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

After typing each command into the command line, press Enter to confirm it. These commands are used for troubleshooting and allow you to repair the Windows system.

Error code 0x80240016

Another common error is 0x80240016. How do you fix the problem in this case? You won’t need to use the command line here. This error often appears during installation or when a system restart is required to apply changes. In this case, resolve the issue by ignoring the error. Afterward, try restarting your computer and check whether the update installed correctly.

Error code 0x80240030

Another update error is the one with code 0x80240030. If it appears, you will need to reset the proxy. This error means that your proxy or firewall settings are preventing you from connecting to the server, and updates cannot be downloaded and installed. To fix the problem, launch the cmd tool (Command Prompt). Then type the following commands, pressing Enter after each one:

netsh winhttp reset proxy

net stop wuauserv

net start wuauserv

This will reset the proxy settings and restart the update service. As a result, the user will be able to install updates without any issues, and the system will start up correctly.

Windows Update for Windows 7

In the case of Windows 7, Microsoft has not supported it since 2020, so no new security updates are released.

If you want to install updates that are already available but Windows Update isn’t working properly, it’s a good idea to use the manual method—that is, download the update files of your choice from the official Microsoft website and use them to update your computer’s operating system.

Windows Update 8.1 Pro

If automatic updates aren't working, you should use the built-in tool to update your computer to the latest version of the operating system. This tool is called "Troubleshooting."

To use it, go to the Start menu, search for "Troubleshooting," and launch the program. At the bottom of the "System and Security" tab, you should see the option "Troubleshoot Windows Update." Click this option. A wizard will appear to guide you through the process of identifying the problem. The system will check your computer and analyze the data to detect problems and resolve them automatically.
