Almost every computer user will eventually come across the term "product key"—most often when installing a program or programs. This also applies to operating systems such as Windows 10. But let’s start by explaining what a product key is and what it’s used for.
Today, in an era where products are distributed primarily digitally, it’s rare to see discs with printed character strings. This used to be very common—every copy of a given program or computer game had a unique product key on the box, in the included manual, or on the disc itself. This made it possible—at least to the most basic extent—to verify the authenticity of the software and combat illegal distribution; after all, in theory, only the purchaser and owner of the physical package had access to the key (also known as a CD key).
In practice, security measures were usually cracked almost as soon as they appeared, and CD keys, along with specially cracked copies (so-called "scracked" installers), were distributed on the black market. A significant portion of people born in the 1980s and early 1990s can likely still recite from memory the product keys for the most popular games and operating systems of that era.
Windows 10 - Checking the product key
Let’s not focus on the less-than-glorious side of the Polish IT market, but rather on today’s reality. The decline in boxed software sales means that individual users are encountering product keys less and less frequently. However, there are still situations where such a number comes in handy—so how do you find it for Windows 10?
Retrieving your Windows 10 product key is relatively simple. The method you’ll need to use depends on the type of license and how the system was installed. So let’s walk through the most common scenarios for retrieving your Windows 10 product key from your computer.
Good to know: In Microsoft Windows 10, the product key always consists of 25 characters.
How do I check the Windows 10 product key stored in the BIOS?
Nowadays, digital licenses and product keys are often stored in the BIOS—the most basic software that acts as an intermediary between the motherboard, individual components, and the computer’s operating system. To find the key there, you can use the command line or one of the programs available online that are designed specifically for this purpose.
To quickly retrieve your system key, just follow these few simple steps. Instructions below:
- Go to the Start menu and find Windows PowerShell;
- Type the following command: wmic path SoftwareLicensingService get OA3xOriginalProductKey;
- Press Enter;
- The CD key should appear on the screen as a series of 5-character groups separated by hyphens, which together form a complete 25-character code.
Another option, which doesn’t require using the command line, is to download a dedicated program. Among such applications, RWeverything and Showkey Plus are the most commonly mentioned. Note: These are popular but still third-party programs that are not licensed by Microsoft—neither the Redmond-based company nor the key-soft.pl store assumes any liability for their use.
Sometimes, due to various errors, it can be difficult to extract the CD key from the BIOS. Don't worry—it's not lost!
How to Find a Windows 10 Product Key - The Most Popular Methods
If you already have a computer and have decided to purchase Windows separately, it’s very simple.
- Boxed version of Windows —the product key is inside the box—is printed next to the disc slot or in a designated section of the user guide included with the system.
- Digital version of Windows – you’ll receive your product key in the email confirming your purchase. This way, even if you don’t feel the need to copy or save it elsewhere, the email containing the key will remain in your inbox.
If you bought a laptop with Windows preinstalled (meaning you just had to plug in the new device and it was ready to go), the product key is inside the box or—more commonly—on a sticker on the laptop’s case. Next to the 25-character key, you’ll usually also find a 14-character Certificate of Authenticity (COA). You don’t need the second number for anything—it’s merely a confirmation of authenticity from the manufacturer, and the unique number makes identification easier if necessary.
Just as with faded receipts, such a sticker may become peeled off or smudged. This happens especially with laptops, which are often moved from place to place. In such a situation, the best course of action is to contact the store where you purchased the computer.
