Windows Defender is an application—or rather, a suite of services—that ensures the security of the Windows operating system. It protects against viruses as well as other types of malware, such as spyware, Trojans, and more. Windows Defender is the default application that comes free with Windows operating systems.
The antivirus software provided by Microsoft consists of a variety of services that can be divided into two main categories: the antivirus application and the firewall. The latter is responsible for protecting your computer from malware by constantly monitoring your internet connection.
Windows Defender - History
Interestingly, although the name "Windows Defender" is still widely recognized and almost everyone refers to the application by that name, the original name has been changed several times—the current brand is Microsoft Defender Antivirus. In one of the Windows 10 updates (specifically, the update released nearly two years after the system’s original launch, numbered 1703 or codenamed “Redstone 2”), Windows Defender was officially renamed to Windows Defender Antivirus. Nearly three years later, in 2020, the application’s name was changed again—this time to Microsoft Defender Antivirus, which remains to this day.
The history of Windows Defender dates back to the early 2000s and the period when Windows XP dominated the operating system market. Initially, it was available as a free anti-spyware program for Windows XP with Service Pack 2. In subsequent versions of Windows, the application was included as an integral part of the operating system. There is no denying that this program has come a long way, and in the early days of its market presence, it was quite clearly inferior to competing programs in terms of effectiveness.
Today, Microsoft Defender Antivirus is still considered basic software, but for many home users, it is more than sufficient to protect their operating system and the files on their computer. However, it is sometimes criticized for its relatively slow updates compared to the best commercially available programs with similar features.
How to disable Windows Defender. Windows 7, Windows 10, Windows 11
In Windows, Microsoft's antivirus doesn't require manual activation every time—it starts up with the system and is designed to run in the background without requiring user intervention. However, there are times when we want to turn it off—sometimes its “suspiciousness” toward certain programs can be annoying, and sometimes the computer is simply protected by another antivirus program. Disabling Windows Defender isn’t difficult—it just requires visiting two sections of the system settings.
Windows Defender - How to Disable the Program and Firewall in Windows 10 and 11?
In Windows 10, Defender is disabled in exactly the same way as in Windows 11. The steps are as follows:
Start → Settings → expand the menu by clicking the three horizontal lines in the top-left corner → go to the Privacy & Security section → Windows Security → Virus & threat protection
Next, uncheck the following two options: Real-time Protection and Cloud-based Protection.
In the "Virus and Threat Protection" menu, you'll also find another tab: "Firewall and Network Protection." Click on it, and you'll see three options: "Domain Network," "Private Network," and "Public Network." Uncheck all of them.
After each change, the system will ask you to confirm the changes you've made.

Next, select the following two features: Real-time Protection and Cloud-based Protection.
Firewall: Start → Settings → expand the menu by clicking the three horizontal lines in the top-left corner → go to the Privacy & Security section → Windows Security → Virus & threat protection
Next, select the options "Domain network," "Private network," and "Public network."

How do I remove Windows Defender in Windows 7?
Note: Uninstalling the program involves a much more significant intervention in the operating system than simply temporarily disabling Windows Defender.
In the Start menu, type services.msc and click the icon in the list. In the window that opens, locate Windows Defender and click on it. Under the Startup type section, select “Disabled.”
Does Windows Defender provide sufficient protection?
When asked whether we need additional protection beyond Windows Defender, the only possible answer is “it depends.” Every user has their own digital habits, uses specific programs, visits certain websites, and has a different approach to system security. Some users pay little attention to malware protection, while others are very strict or even overzealous in this regard. It’s safe to assume that if a user uses a computer at a basic level and relies exclusively on genuine, trusted software, Windows Defender will likely provide sufficient protection.
Keep in mind that Windows Defender can generally coexist with other antivirus programs without issues, but “conflicts” may occasionally arise between them—in such cases, temporarily disabling one of them usually helps.
In addition to Windows Defender (which is, in fact, Microsoft Defender Antivirus), the most common antivirus programs include COMODO Antivirus, Avast, AVG, Bitdefender, G-Data, and many others.
